Wild mountain plants sort into metal-trapping and metal-pulling specialists

If you've ever wondered whether the scrappy weeds growing on an old mine site or industrial lot could actually help clean the ground, this study shows specific native plants can do exactly that, some by burying toxic metals safely in their roots, others by hauling them up into leaves you could later harvest and remove.

Scientists studied 11 plants growing wild at a lead-zinc mine in Iran to see how they handle toxic metals in the soil. They found two useful strategies: plants like woundwort and a groundsel species keep the metals trapped in their roots, acting like natural barriers, while yarrow and a few others pull the metals up into their stems and leaves, essentially vacuuming toxins out of the soil. Yarrow was the standout, concentrating iron in its shoots at three times the level found in the ground below it.

Soil at the mine site contained cadmium, copper, and nickel at 198x, 124x, and 86x normal background levels respectively.

Stachys inflata and Senecio gallicus kept toxic elements concentrated in roots rather than shoots (translocation factor below 1), making them candidates for stabilizing contaminated soil in place.

Achillea millefolium (yarrow), Phlomis olivieri, and Euphorbia szovitsii pulled metals up into shoots (translocation factor above 1), with yarrow reaching a translocation factor of 3.03 for iron, making them candidates for active metal removal.
