Drones collect insect DNA from crops to track farm biodiversity

The hedgerow or wildflower strip bordering a farm field you pass on a walk may be doing more for insect diversity than the farming label on the crop itself, since bugs freely move between wild patches and cropland regardless of how the field is managed.

Researchers flew a drone low over rapeseed fields and used it to swab crop surfaces, picking up tiny traces of DNA that insects left behind just by walking or landing there. From those swabs they identified 75 different insect groups, spanning 33 species, without setting a single trap. Surprisingly, fields farmed organically, conventionally, or under a stricter eco-label all showed similar insect diversity, suggesting that insects from nearby wild or semi-natural areas spill into every field type regardless of how it's managed.
