The fine web of fungal threads helping your tomatoes and perennials pull water from soil has been nearly impossible to observe without killing the plant, and these new scanning tools finally let researchers watch that exchange happen in living roots.
Almost every plant in your garden has a secret partner underground: mycorrhizal fungi that wrap around or into roots and trade minerals for sugar. Scientists used to have to dig up and destroy roots to study this relationship, but this review rounds up new tools, like 3D X-ray scanners, portable MRI machines, and even drone-based imaging, that let researchers watch the partnership happen live and at scales from a single root tip to a whole field. That means we're getting much closer to understanding exactly how these fungal partnerships boost plant health.

X-ray computed tomography, X-ray fluorescence, and XANES spectroscopy allow non-destructive 3D visualization of root-fungal structures and nutrient chemistry.
