Root fungus helps okra thrive in salty, metal-tainted soil

If you've ever struggled with a corner of your garden that stays salty or was once near old paint or batteries, this fungus points to a way to farm that soil again instead of giving up on it.
Scientists found a fungus living inside the roots of a desert shrub called Ziziphus lotus, and when they added it to okra plants growing in salty, cadmium-polluted soil, the plants grew nearly 29% taller and packed on three times more weight than untreated plants. The fungus seems to work like a stress coach: it dials down the plant's panic hormone, boosts its growth hormones, and cranks up its natural antioxidant defenses so the plant can shrug off toxic metal instead of soaking it up unchecked. It's a hint that the right microscopic partner could help crops keep producing on land that's otherwise too damaged to farm.
