Cheaper DNA test spots gene-editing results in rice plants

Every bowl of rice grown from an edited seed had to pass a screening test somewhere along the way, and making that test cheaper means more labs and breeding programs worldwide can afford to develop hardier, more nutritious rice varieties.

When scientists use CRISPR to tweak a plant's genes, they need to check whether the edit actually took hold, which normally requires pricey specialized equipment and reagents. This study shows that everyday lab chemistry, paired with a free computer script, can reliably spot those tiny genetic changes in rice just as well. That makes gene-editing verification more accessible to labs with smaller budgets, including in developing countries where rice research matters most.

Standard SYBR Green qPCR chemistry combined with a custom R script for melting-temperature and dissimilarity analysis could distinguish edited from wild-type DNA without proprietary HRM reagents.

Mixtures containing just 1% edited DNA showed a slight but noteworthy deviation from wild-type melting profiles, though the authors caution this isn't yet a validated detection threshold.
