Sorghum and biochar team up to clean oily soil fast

If you've ever wondered whether a struggling patch of soil near an old driveway or garage could ever grow anything again, this shows a specific plant-and-soil-amendment combo can rescue oil-tainted ground and turn it productive.
Oil spills and sludge wreck soil, but researchers turned that same waste sludge into biochar (a charcoal-like soil additive) and paired it with sorghum, a hardy grass crop. Together they cleaned up pollutants way faster than the biochar or the plant could alone, while the sorghum grew bigger roots and shoots and suffered way less stress damage. It's a neat example of turning a waste problem into its own solution.

Biochar at 1% application reduced soil salinity by about 30% and boosted dehydrogenase enzyme activity by more than 60%
Sorghum plus biochar together degraded total PAHs (petroleum pollutants) by about 54%, more than the sum of either treatment alone
Biochar cut plant oxidative stress (MDA) by 73% and increased sorghum shoot biomass by 43% and root biomass by 72% under high contamination
