Silicon nanoparticles and melatonin help peppers survive toxic soil metal

If you grow peppers or other edibles in urban soil that might carry trace heavy metals, this points to affordable soil treatments that could reduce how much cadmium ends up in your plants.

Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal that can build up in soil and stress out plants, damaging their cells and stunting growth. Researchers found that spraying ornamental pepper plants with tiny silicon particles and the hormone melatonin helped them cope: the plants absorbed less cadmium, kept photosynthesizing better, and showed less cell damage. The combo treatment worked best, though scientists still need to confirm whether the two ingredients truly boost each other's effects or just add up.
