If you grow food near old roadways, industrial sites, or older homes where lead paint once flaked into the soil, this points to an affordable way to grow safer crops without having to excavate or replace contaminated dirt.

Lead-contaminated soil is a real problem for farmers and home gardeners alike, since plants can pull that lead up into the parts we eat. Researchers tested wheat grown in lead-polluted soil and found that treating it with a mix of helpful soil microbes plus a common antioxidant compound (the same one used in cough medicine) made the plants healthier and grow bigger, while cutting the amount of lead that reached the grain by more than half. It's a low-tech, low-cost combo that could help make contaminated land usable again for growing food safely.
