If you've ever wondered how contaminated land near old mines or industrial sites could be cleaned up without heavy machinery, this scrappy grass shows that some plants can do the job just by growing there.
Scientists studied a grass called Leersia hexandra that thrives in polluted wetlands and found it's remarkably good at soaking up nickel, a metal that's toxic to most life, without poisoning itself. The trick is in the roots: they act like a filtration and storage system, using energy-powered pumps to pull nickel in and then parking most of it in the root tip and central core rather than letting it travel up to the leaves. Over time the plant also shifts its internal chemistry, tweaking hormones and metabolism to keep tolerating the metal, which makes it a promising candidate for cleaning up nickel-contaminated sites naturally.
