Algae air purifiers show promise but lack real-world proof

If you've eyed one of those trendy algae-filled air purifier columns for your living room, this review is the reality check before you spend the money.

Some companies sell air purifiers that use living algae to soak up harmful chemicals like formaldehyde and benzene from indoor air. This review dug through the science and found that most of the promising results come from algae dunked in liquid in a lab, not from real air moving through a real room, so we don't actually know yet how well these systems work in your house. The researchers say algae could eventually help as a supplemental cleanup step, but they're not ready to replace your regular air filter or good ventilation.
