The mushrooms and molds you spot on a rotting log or in your compost bin belong to the same group of organisms researchers are now engineering to chew through polystyrene foam.

Researchers reviewed how certain fungi, bacteria, and even mealworms can digest polystyrene, the hard-to-recycle plastic used in foam packaging and insulation. Some fungi produce enzymes that break the plastic's chemical bonds, while mealworm and superworm gut bacteria physically and chemically chew through it. The catch is that many past studies confused surface scratching and weight loss with true breakdown, so the review pushes for better tests to confirm plastic is actually being converted into harmless byproducts.
