The compost pile or garden bed you're building could get a serious upgrade by mixing in biochar, a cheap soil amendment that holds onto nutrients and water far longer than regular compost.
Biochar is basically charcoal made by heating plant waste, wood chips, or crop leftovers without much oxygen, and it turns out to be surprisingly good for soil. It helps soil hold nutrients and water better, feeds beneficial soil microbes, locks up heavy metals so plants can't absorb them, and can store carbon in the ground for a very long time instead of letting it escape as greenhouse gas. The catch is that not all biochar is equal: what it's made from and how hot it's cooked changes how well it works.
