Radiation breeding doses must be tailored to each aster variety

If you've ever grown China asters from seed, this explains why plant breeders can't use a one-size-fits-all radiation dose to create new colors and forms, since your favorite pink variety might die from a dose another variety barely notices.
Plant breeders sometimes use radiation to scramble a plant's genes and create new, useful mutations, like unusual flower colors. But too much radiation just kills the seeds instead of creating helpful variety. Researchers tested six kinds of China aster with increasing radiation doses and found that some varieties, like Arka Kamini, could handle much stronger doses than others, like Phule Ganesh Pink, meaning breeders need to customize the radiation dose for each variety instead of using the same amount for all of them.

Average germination dropped from 97.50% (no radiation) to 66.67% at the highest dose tested (100 Gy)
Average seedling survival fell from 95.22% to 45.33% as radiation dose increased
LD50 (dose killing half the seedlings) ranged from 77.43 Gy in the most sensitive variety (Phule Ganesh Pink) to 134.55 Gy in the most tolerant (Arka Kamini)
