Less fertilizer helps gerbera daisies fight off powdery mildew

Plant Signaling

If you grow gerbera daisies or other flowers prone to powdery mildew, dialing back nitrogen fertilizer, rather than reaching for another fungicide, could be the fix that keeps your plants both healthy and blooming.

Researchers found that gerbera daisies given less nitrate fertilizer got sick with powdery mildew less often. The lower-nitrogen plants made fewer of the amino acids that seem to help the fungus thrive, and instead built up more of their own natural defense compounds. The trick works as long as nitrate doesn't drop too low, since the flowers still need enough to grow well.

Key Findings

1

Lower nitrate availability reduced Podosphaera xanthii (powdery mildew) infection in Gerbera hybrida, consistent with the nitrogen-induced susceptibility concept

2

Reduced nitrate was linked to decreased amino acid levels and increased defense metabolites including gerberin, gerberinside, parasorboside, and chlorogenic acid derivatives

3

Moderate nitrate reduction improved resistance without hurting flower biomass, as long as nitrate stayed above 3 mM

chevron_right Technical Summary

Gerbera daisies fed less nitrogen fertilizer resist powdery mildew better because the plant redirects resources into natural defense chemicals instead of the amino acids that feed the fungus.

Nitrate availability influences powdery mildew resistance and secondary metabolism in Gerbera hybrida

Powdery mildew ( Podosphaera xanthii ) is a major disease affecting gerbera ( Gerbera hybrida , Asteraceae), and nitrogen availability is a key factor influencing disease development. Our objective...

Gerbera

Gerbera L. is a genus of plants in the Asteraceae (Compositae) family. The first scientific description of a Gerbera was made by J. D. Hooker in Curtis's Botanical Magazine in 1889 when he described Gerbera jamesonii, a South African species also known as Transvaal daisy or Barberton daisy. Gerbe...
