That uncommon wildflower you spot on a mountain hike may only persist because it evolved flowers similar enough to its abundant neighbors to piggyback on their pollinator traffic.
Scientists studying 44 flowering plants in high-altitude Tibetan grasslands found that rare species aren't losing out to their more common neighbors, they're actually benefiting from them. When a rare flower looks or smells similar to an abundant one, it attracts the same bees and other pollinators, picking up extra pollen it wouldn't get on its own. Meanwhile the abundant species pay a small price, dealing with more competition from their own kind for those same pollinator visits.
