The next time you spot leaves of wildly different sizes on the same shaded, drought-stressed plant in your garden, you're seeing the plant hedge its bets rather than a sign it's struggling.

Scientists grew a woodland herb called sweet woodruff under different combinations of drought and shade, then measured how much its leaves, flowers, and timing of life stages varied within a single plant. They found that stressed plants, especially those facing both drought and early shade, produced far more variation in their leaves than in calm conditions, while flowers stayed more uniform except when plants were unstressed. This suggests that plants deliberately mix things up among their own leaves and flowers as a way to cope with unpredictable environments, not just because they're struggling.
