Scientists tracked thousands of falcon nests across the Arctic and found that birds who stay put year-round (gyrfalcons) are adjusting their egg-laying dates to match earlier snowmelt and greener springs much faster than birds who migrate long distances (peregrines). Oddly, hotter summers ended up hurting chick survival in both groups instead of helping, likely because young birds overheat in the nest. It's a reminder that as spring keeps arriving earlier, some animals and plants can track that shift while others, locked into rigid seasonal schedules, get left behind.
Key Findings
Analysis of 5,546 peregrine and 2,241 gyrfalcon hatch records across 20 Arctic sites found earlier hatching at 5 of 9 gyrfalcon sites and 4 of 11 peregrine sites.
In the Low Arctic, gyrfalcons advanced hatch dates by 1.62 days per decade versus 0.41 days per decade for migratory peregrines.
Higher spring temperatures, greener vegetation, and earlier snowmelt were linked to earlier hatching, but hotter summers reduced chick productivity in both species.
