If you're gardening on an old industrial lot, near a highway, or in a city with lead paint history, cheap soil additives like poultry manure or zeolite could meaningfully cut how much lead ends up in your vegetables.
Lead-contaminated soil is a real problem near old mines, factories, and city lots, because plants can pull that lead up through their roots. Researchers tested organic amendments like poultry manure, cattle manure, and sewage sludge alongside a mineral called zeolite, and found that poultry manure and finely ground zeolite were the best at binding lead into forms plants can't easily absorb. Zeolite ground finer than 0.4 millimeters and applied at 10% of soil volume worked best, cutting available lead by 61%.

Fine zeolite (< 0.4 mm) applied at 10% reduced acid-labile (plant-available) lead by 61%, the strongest result of any treatment.
Poultry manure at 5% and 10% doses reduced available lead by 17% and 32%, respectively, while also raising soil pH.
Both organic amendments and zeolite shifted lead into more stable forms bound to organic matter and iron/aluminum oxides, reducing its mobility.
