Mining for rare earth elements leaves behind soil that's basically dead: too acidic, low in nutrients, and full of bacteria that attack plant roots. Scientists found that mixing in biochar, a charcoal-like material made from burning organic matter, let ryegrass thrive again. It worked by raising the soil's pH, boosting organic matter dramatically, and shifting the microbial community toward helpful, phosphorus-releasing bacteria while pushing out harmful pathogens.
