If you grow vegetables in soil near old industrial sites or roadways, this points to a low-tech way to keep heavy metals out of your dinner without giving up the garden bed.

Chromium pollution in soil is a real problem because a toxic form of it, Cr(VI), moves easily and gets taken up by food crops. Researchers found that pairing a natural soil bacterium with biochar (basically charcoal made for soil improvement) creates a combo that grabs onto chromium and converts it into a safer, less mobile form. When lettuce grew in treated soil, it pulled in far less chromium, and the plant even adjusted its internal chemistry to cope with what little stress remained.

The bacteria-biochar composite (BSR1) reduced soil Cr(VI) by 94.2% and exchangeable chromium by 84.1% compared to untreated soil.

The bacterium Serratia sp. Y-13 immobilizes chromium via cell-wall adsorption, periplasmic accumulation, and direct Cr(VI) reduction, while biochar adds oxygen-containing surface groups that boost binding.

Treatment significantly cut chromium movement from lettuce roots to shoots and triggered changes in antioxidant enzymes, phenylpropanoid metabolism, and ABC transporter gene expression.
