Wastewater byproduct could feed crops while trapping toxic cadmium

If you've ever worried about heavy metals building up in soil from years of fertilizer use, this offers a way to recycle a waste stream into something that locks that cadmium away instead of letting it reach your vegetables.

Researchers pulled phosphorus out of real wastewater and turned it into a mineral called ferric phosphate, which plants can use as a nutrient. When they tested it in cadmium-contaminated water, the material released enough phosphorus to help crops grow while grabbing onto nearly 90% of the cadmium and locking it inside a protective iron coating so it can't easily leach back out. It's essentially recycling pollution into a soil helper that does double duty: feeding plants and quarantining a toxic metal at the same time.
