Manure-treated farm soil harbors bacteria longer than rules assume

If you compost or amend your garden beds with animal manure, this study shows the safety clock isn't as simple as counting to 90 days: rain, soil moisture, and nutrient levels can all reawaken bacterial survival long after application.
Organic farmers often use raw animal manure to fertilize their soil, and current rules say you should wait 90 to 120 days before harvesting food crops from that soil. This study followed 19 organic farms across four states and found that E. coli levels in the soil drop quickly at first, but then unexpectedly climb back up by around day 180. Wetter soil, rainy weather, certain nutrient levels, and even the type of manure used all played a role in how long the bacteria stuck around.
Key Findings
E. coli concentration declined sharply in the first 60 days after manure application (β: -1.00) but rose again through day 180.
Soil moisture, phosphorus, zinc, and manganese levels were all positively associated with higher E. coli concentrations in soil.
Weather factors mattered: increased precipitation and UV index correlated with higher E. coli, while higher wind speed correlated with lower levels.
