Forest-disturbed soil fungi stay diverse, aiding tree restoration efforts

Restoration projects trying to bring back native forest often overlook the soil itself, and this study suggests that protecting or reintroducing these root fungi could be as important as planting the trees.
Deep in the soil, tiny fungi called arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi wrap around tree roots and act like extension cords, helping seedlings pull in more water and nutrients than they could alone. Researchers checked these fungi in three Kenyan forest patches with different levels of human disturbance and found that even though colonization rates varied a lot between tree species, the overall diversity of fungal communities stayed remarkably stable regardless of how disturbed the forest was. That resilience is good news: it means these helpful fungi are likely still there and ready to support tree seedlings even in damaged forest fragments.
