If you've ever wondered why some flowers smell strongest at certain times of day, this passionflower shows scent isn't constant background noise, it's a precisely timed signal built to catch one particular pollinator's brief flying window.

A type of passionflower called Passiflora pohlii opens its blooms right at dawn and releases a strong citrus smell from little fringe-like filaments in the flower's center. That scent is almost gone within a couple hours, matching exactly when its early-morning bee pollinators are out and about. Under the microscope, the scent-making cells actually break down once their job is done, so the flower stops perfuming itself once the right bees have had their chance to visit.
