When a plant gets cut, crushed, or torn, the damage itself sends out chemical distress signals, similar to how a scraped knee triggers healing in animals. Those signals temporarily loosen the rules for nearby cells, letting them become something new like a root or shoot, but only in a tightly controlled area right around the wound. Hormones then step in to sculpt exactly what grows back, while the plant simultaneously rushes to seal the wound and fend off infection.
