Sorghum is one of the toughest crops around, thriving in drought and poor soil where corn and wheat struggle, so the breeding tricks that made it more productive in China offer a blueprint for climate-resilient gardening and farming everywhere.

Sorghum is a hardy grain crop that handles heat and drought better than most cereals, making it a lifeline in dry regions. Chinese researchers figured out how to breed sterile sorghum plants that could only be pollinated by chosen partners, letting them mass-produce hybrid seeds with better yield and quality.
