X-ray scanners reveal secret underground world of roots and microbes

The soil structure around your tomato plant's roots, whether it's compacted, cracked, or full of tiny air pockets, may matter as much to plant health as which microbes are actually down there.

Researchers are proposing that we use X-ray CT, the same 3D scanning technology hospitals use, to peek inside soil without disturbing it. This lets scientists watch how the physical shape of soil and root systems, like tiny channels and pore spaces, affects where microbes live and how plants fight off disease. The eventual goal is building digital models of the rhizosphere (the zone around roots) that could help breed better crops and design smarter soil management practices.
