Cotton farmers spray chemicals before harvest to make leaves fall off so machines can pick the cotton cleanly. Researchers found two genes, one that acts like a switch and another that rebuilds the cell wall, working together to create a breakaway point where the leaf meets the stem. When they turned off the cell-wall gene, leaves stayed stuck on much longer, showing exactly how this molecular handoff makes leaves let go.
