Anxiety drugs are slipping past river-cleaning wetland plants

The reed beds and constructed wetlands increasingly used to filter wastewater only work as advertised when someone actually maintains the plants, a lesson that applies just as much to a home rain garden or bioswale.

Scientists tested two rivers in the Czech Republic and found traces of diazepam (a common anti-anxiety medication) and the compounds it breaks down into in nearly every water sample. A treatment system that uses plant roots to naturally filter wastewater was supposed to catch these chemicals, but it didn't work well, probably because nobody kept it properly maintained. That's a reminder that living filtration systems, whether a giant wetland or a backyard rain garden, need ongoing care to actually do their job.
