Microplastics, the tiny plastic fragments found almost everywhere now, aren't just passive litter. Bacteria actually colonize these plastic surfaces, forming what scientists call a plastisphere, and this community can either stress out plants and soil life or, in a surprising twist, help break down the plastic itself. The outcome depends on things like temperature, plastic type, and how long the plastic has been sitting around.
