If you've ever wondered how a former industrial lot or dredged canal sediment gets turned back into usable land, this two-step process of composting first and planting second is the low-tech playbook that makes it possible.

When soil or sediment gets contaminated with oil or fuel, cleanup crews sometimes use compost to help microbes break down the pollution, then follow up by planting things that pull remaining toxins out through their roots. This study looked at doing both steps in sequence rather than picking just one, using the microbial boost from composting to soften up the contamination before plants finish the job.
