That compostable-labeled plant pot or bioplastic mulch film in your shed only breaks down cleanly if your local composting system is actually built to handle it, which most aren't yet.
Researchers have found enzymes that can chew apart plastics like PET, which sounds like a dream fix for plastic pollution. But the authors of this paper say that's only half the story: even a great enzyme is useless if the plastic never gets properly sorted, collected, or sent to a facility equipped to use it. The same goes for 'bioplastics' made from plants; just because something is plant-based or labeled biodegradable doesn't mean it will actually break down once it leaves the factory.
