The fallen leaves, corn husks, and other plant residues you might toss in the compost bin can be turned into cheap filters that pull heavy metals and dyes out of contaminated water.
Researchers rounded up the latest ways to clean polluted water using living or once-living materials instead of harsh chemicals. Fungi, bacteria, yeast, and leftover plant parts like husks and stalks can act like tiny sponges, grabbing onto toxic metals and dyes as water passes through them. Scientists are now combining these natural materials with nanotechnology to make them grab even more pollution and last longer before wearing out.
