If you've ever planted Joseph's coat as a border plant for its bright leaves, you're growing something that scientists now see as a legitimate tool for pulling chromium, nickel, and cadmium out of contaminated dirt.

Researchers dosed a popular ornamental plant called Joseph's coat with three toxic metals at once, something that mimics real polluted sites where contamination rarely comes from just one source. The plant's growth suffered at high doses, but it still sucked up impressive amounts of all three metals into its leaves and stems while boosting its internal chemical defenses, like antioxidants and stress hormones, to cope with the damage. That combination of heavy metal uptake and built-in toughness makes it a strong candidate for replanting on contaminated land.
