The healthy, dark soil you work into your vegetable beds is teeming with microbes that scientists are now learning to team up with nanoparticles to help plants fight off disease and stress on their own.

Researchers reviewed how pairing beneficial soil microbes with specially designed nanoparticles can help plants build stronger natural defenses against disease, drought, and other stresses. The two work together, with microbes and nanoparticles each triggering different parts of a plant's immune system, changing how roots interact with soil, and helping plants pull in more nutrients. The idea is still being refined, but it points toward farming that leans more on biology and less on synthetic chemicals.
