Mulch and manure help drought-stressed roses bloom more

If you grow roses (or any water-thirsty ornamental) in a dry climate, this shows that layering mulch with composted manure can substitute for some of the water you'd otherwise need to haul out with a hose.

Researchers grew damask roses, the fragrant kind used for rose oil, under different watering schedules and soil treatments. They found that adding a layer of mulch plus animal manure helped the roses handle less frequent watering far better, producing more and healthier blooms even when water was scarce. The combo worked because it kept moisture in the soil and gave the plants an extra nutrient boost to cope with stress.
