Zinc and manganese spray team up to cut cadmium in rice

If you grow vegetables in soil near old roads, industrial sites, or fertilizer-heavy fields, this points to a low-cost foliar spray trick that could help keep heavy metals out of your harvest.

Rice plants growing in contaminated soil can soak up cadmium, a toxic heavy metal, and pass it into the grains people eat. Researchers found that spraying the leaves with both zinc and manganese together traps more cadmium in the leaves themselves, keeping it out of the rice grain, and does this better than spraying either nutrient alone. The two nutrients seem to work as a team, changing how the plant's internal transport genes handle cadmium so it gets locked away instead of moving to the food we harvest.
