Drones can now count rice grain clusters more accurately

Farmers and agronomists tracking rice yield across large fields could soon get faster, more reliable counts of grain-bearing panicles from a single drone flight instead of walking rows by hand.

Rice plants grow clusters of grain called panicles, and counting them from above is one of the best ways to predict how much a field will yield. The problem is that drone photos taken outdoors are often blurry or messy, which trips up computer vision tools. This study fixes the blurry images first, then uses a trick that estimates how far each part of the plant is from the camera to help the computer separate panicles from leaves, making the detection much more accurate.
