A root-dwelling bacterium helps corn survive toxic, metal-laced soil

If you garden near old industrial land, railway tracks, or a former orchard where lead arsenate was once sprayed, the microbes already living in your soil and plant roots might be doing more to protect your vegetables than you realize.
Researchers found a bacterium, related to the kind that normally teams up with pea and bean plants, living happily inside corn plants growing in metal-contaminated soil. This particular strain doesn't need a legume host and instead makes itself at home in corn roots, where it appears to soak up some of the stress that heavy metals like cadmium or lead cause the plant. The corn plants carrying this bacterium showed fewer signs of the cellular damage that toxic metals usually trigger.
