The bees visiting your tomato flowers or apple blossoms can survive a pesticide exposure and still lose their sense of direction, their memory, or their ability to raise healthy brood, which means a colony can look fine and collapse anyway.
Scientists reviewed ten years of studies on how pesticides affect honeybees and found the damage goes way beyond simply killing them outright. Sub-lethal doses, the small amounts bees pick up from treated flowers, mess with their navigation, immune systems, and ability to care for young, which can quietly unravel a whole hive over time. The review argues that current safety testing for new pesticides misses a lot of this slow-burn damage, so bees are less protected than the rules assume.
