If you spot a cluster of waxy white stalks in the deep shade of your local woods, it's not a fungus or a dying plant, it's Ghost Pipe, a flowering species that survives entirely by tapping into the sugar network shared between trees and fungi.
Ghost Pipe looks nothing like a typical plant: it's pure white, has no green leaves, and grows in the darkest parts of the forest floor. That's because it doesn't photosynthesize at all. Instead it steals its food from fungi that are themselves connected to nearby tree roots, and this week nearly a thousand people logged sightings of it on iNaturalist, right as it's pushing up through leaf litter in shaded woodlands.
