The soggy corner of your yard or the wetland at your local park is quietly releasing methane, and a simple charcoal soil amendment could help native microbes soak up more of it before it reaches the atmosphere.
Wetlands are full of tiny bacteria called methanotrophs that eat methane, a greenhouse gas far more potent than carbon dioxide. Scientists found that mixing in biochar, a charcoal-like material made by heating plant waste, gives these bacteria a boost: the biochar made at 400°C worked best, helping the microbes process methane 25% faster and turn it into their own biomass instead of getting stuck. When tested in real wetland soil, the same biochar cut methane release and also encouraged more of these helpful bacteria to thrive.
