Worm compost helps corn plants resist lead poisoning in soil

If you're growing vegetables in a raised bed near an old road or building where lead in the soil is a real worry, this points to compost as a practical tool for cutting how much of that metal ends up in your crops.
Lead-contaminated soil is a serious problem for farmers and gardeners because plants can absorb the metal and pass it into food. Researchers found that mixing vermicompost, which is compost made using worms, into lead-polluted soil helped corn seedlings grow much bigger roots and shoots while also blocking a lot of the lead from getting into the plant tissue. The best results came from a moderate compost dose that improved soil quality and helped the plants keep their internal mineral balance in check even under heavy lead stress.

Compost improved ion balance, reducing root sodium by 38.61% and increasing shoot potassium by 68.75%, while shifting lead transfer patterns (translocation factor up 40.99%, bioconcentration factor down 35.50%)
