Household dust triggers cell damage and inflammation in lung tissue

If you've ever wondered whether that peace lily on your windowsill is doing anything, this study is a reminder that the dust settling on its leaves is the same stuff settling in your lungs, and reducing indoor particulate buildup (through ventilation, filtration, or yes, a few well-placed plants) has a measurable biological upside.
Scientists exposed lung cells and a lab-grown model of lung tissue to household dust and watched what happened inside the cells. The dust caused damage to cell membranes, set off an inflammatory alarm system, and made the lung tissue's protective barrier leaky, showing how something as ordinary as indoor dust can stress living tissue.

Indoor dust particles were visible inside lung cells within 3 hours and persisted at 24 hours of exposure
Dust exposure increased oxidative stress markers (4-HNE) and activated the NLRP3 inflammasome, raising IL-1β inflammatory signaling in a dose- and time-dependent manner
