Every time a stem cutting roots in a jar of water on your windowsill, or a pruned hedge sends out fresh branches, these WOX genes are the switches deciding where new growth begins.
Plants have a small set of genes called WOX that act like foremen on a construction site, telling cells when to become a root, a leaf, a flower, or a new shoot after pruning. Scientists have spent the last five years discovering that these same genes also help plants sense stress, talk to metabolism, and coordinate with chemical messenger peptides. The more researchers understand this gene family, the better they can guide plant breeding, tissue regeneration, and stress-tolerant crops.
