Silicon soil additives cut toxic metals in grain by 30 percent

If you grow vegetables in soil you suspect might carry old lead paint chips or industrial residue, this research points to a genuinely low-tech fix (silicon amendments) that works at three separate stages to keep those metals out of your harvest.

Scientists looked at dozens of studies where farmers added silicon-rich materials to metal-contaminated soil and found the silicon works like a three-stage bodyguard for crops: it locks heavy metals in the soil so roots can't easily absorb them, blocks the metals that do get absorbed from traveling up to the grain, and helps the plant photosynthesize better to shrug off the stress. Using machine learning, they could also predict how much heavy metal would end up in the grain based on soil conditions, and their predictions matched real measurements closely.

An AdaBoost machine learning model predicted grain heavy metal levels with high accuracy (R2 0.84-0.95), identifying soil heavy metal content, available phosphorus, phosphorus fertilizer rate, and soil pH as the top predictors.
