Rice leaves evolved super water-repellent surfaces long before farming began

The way rain beads up and rolls off a rice leaf instead of soaking in is a defense system that keeps fungal spores from taking hold, and understanding it could help breeders build sturdier, disease-resistant crops.

Some rice leaves are so water-repellent that droplets form near-perfect spheres and roll right off, a trait scientists call superhydrophobicity. By studying mutant rice plants, everyday farm varieties, and wild rice relatives, researchers found this water-shedding power comes mainly from the amount and type of waxy coating on the leaf, with tiny bump-like structures called papillae adding an extra boost. Surprisingly, this trait shows up in wild ancestral rice too, meaning it evolved on its own in nature rather than being bred in by farmers.
