Crushed rock plus cover crops could supercharge farm carbon capture

If you compost or mulch your garden beds, this points to a next-level trick: adding crushed rock to soil where roots are actively growing can speed up how fast that soil locks away carbon and feeds plants.
Farmers already plant cover crops like clover or rye between growing seasons to protect and enrich soil, but this alone can sometimes backfire by releasing extra greenhouse gases. Researchers found that spreading crushed rock on those fields works together with the cover crop roots to speed up a natural chemical process called weathering, which locks carbon into the soil and releases nutrients plants need. The catch is figuring out how much rock to use and making sure it doesn't introduce unwanted metals into the soil.
