If you've ever soaked seeds before sowing to give them a head start, this research shows that trick can also toughen plants against dry spells, though the right soak depends entirely on what you're growing.
Scientists looked at 28 studies on 'seed priming,' which is basically giving seeds a pre-treatment (like a nutrient soak) before planting, to see if it helps crops handle drought later on. They found that rapeseed plants respond by ramping up their internal antioxidant defenses to prevent cell damage, while cotton plants take a different approach, holding onto water in their leaves and pouring resources into making more seeds and bolls even under stress. The takeaway is that there's no universal priming recipe: what works for one crop's drought defense doesn't necessarily work for another.
