Soil microbes plus silicon particles team up to fight crop drought

If you've ever watched a garden bed wilt during a dry spell despite regular watering, this research points to a soil-and-nutrient combo that could help plants cope with less water rather than more.

Scientists reviewed how two drought-fighting tools work even better together: helpful bacteria that live around plant roots, and tiny particles of silicon (a common, safe mineral). The bacteria help roots grow stronger and regulate plant hormones, while the silicon particles protect cell membranes and help leaves keep working during water shortages. Used together, they seem to give plants a bigger boost against drought stress than using either one alone.
